In the sacred lanes of Vrindavan and Mathura, where every stone carries the echo of Krishna’s name, hundreds of elderly widowed mothers are silently battling hunger, cold and loneliness. Many of them have spent their entire lives caring for families, giving love, support and strength to others. Yet today, in the final years of their journey, they stand abandoned—waiting for someone to simply see them, remember them and hold their hand.

Bitter winter nights in Braj are unforgiving. The icy wind slips through broken windows and thin walls, and old frail bodies shiver constantly. Some of these mothers sleep on the floor with hardly any bedding; some have nothing more than a thin, torn shawl to wrap around their weak shoulders. Their stomachs often remain empty, and the ache of hunger mixes with the sting of cold and the deep pain of being completely alone in the world.

A simple plate of hot food can calm the fire of their hunger. A warm shawl can protect their aging bodies from the biting wind. A small strip of medicine can ease the pain of long-ignored illness. What appears to be a very small gesture to us can become a turning point of hope in the life of a forgotten mother. One thali of nutritious prasad, one woollen shawl and a little medical support can bring dignity, comfort and the feeling that “I am not alone” back into her heart.

This holy land of Vrindavan and Mathura is called the punya bhoomi of compassion and devotion.
