They Carry Coal, Not Books. Help Dhanbad's Forgotten Children Reclaim Childhood

In the Coal Capital of India, Childhood is Buried Under Dust

In Dhanbad's coal mining belt, while India powers forward, thousands of children remain trapped in a dark reality—breathing coal dust instead of hope, carrying mining bags instead of school books, battling hunger instead of learning their ABCs.

These are not ordinary children. They are sons and daughters of coal miners—families who have spent generations extracting the coal that lights up our cities, yet live in crushing darkness themselves.

Meet 8-year-old Radha. Every morning, instead of wearing a school uniform, she straps a coal-filled basket to her tiny back. Her lungs are filled with toxic dust. Her stomach is often empty. Her dreams? Buried under the weight of survival.

This is the reality for over 500 children in Dhanbad's coal mining communities.

The Invisible Crisis: Children Paying the Price of Coal

Toxic Environment, Stolen Childhood

  • Respiratory nightmares: Children as young as 5 suffer from asthma, tuberculosis, chronic coughs, and lung infections from constant coal dust exposure
  • Contaminated water: Families drink water mixed with coal residue, causing jaundice, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, and waterborne diseases
  • Malnutrition epidemic: Stunted growth, weakened immunity, developmental delays—children are growing up malnourished and sick
  • No education access: Over 70% of coal miner children never attend school, trapped in intergenerational poverty

Parents' Desperate Reality

Coal mining families earn ₹150–250 per day through backbreaking illegal coal scavenging. With mechanization and outsourcing, even these meager wages are disappearing.

The choice is brutal: Feed your child today, or send them to school for a tomorrow that seems impossible.

Most parents choose survival. Children join their parents in the mines.

Sahadeva Foundation: A Ray of Light in the Coal Darkness

Founded by Harsh Singh, a 22-year-old who couldn't ignore the suffering in his own backyard, Sahadeva Foundation has been fighting this battle for 6 years in Dhanbad's most vulnerable coal mining communities.

What started with 20 children has grown to over 200 children receiving:

  • ✅ Free quality education (LKG to Class 10) with dedicated teachers
  • ✅ Nutritious daily meals to combat malnutrition
  • ✅ Clean drinking water for 200+ families (20-liter jars distributed weekly)
  • ✅ Healthcare support and mental health counseling
  • ✅ Stationery and learning materials

"We told parents: Let your children study. We'll provide everything—food, education, care. Just give them a chance," says Harsh Singh.

But the need far exceeds current capacity. Hundreds more children are still waiting.

The Heartbreaking Numbers

  • ● 500+ children in Dhanbad's mining areas still have no access to food or education
  • ● 100,000+ people scavenge coal illegally due to lack of alternatives
  • ● 45+ deaths in recent years from mine collapses and land subsidence
  • ● 80% children suffer from chronic respiratory diseases
  • ● 90% families face acute food insecurity

Without intervention, these children will become the next generation of coal scavengers—sick, uneducated, trapped.

Your Donation Transforms Lives

Your Gift Direct Impact
₹500 Nutritious meals for 5 children for one week
₹1,000 School supplies and stationery for 10 children
₹2,500 Monthly food ration kit for one mining family
₹5,000 Complete education + meals for one child for one month

Every rupee goes directly to feeding, educating, and healing these forgotten children.

Why This Campaign Matters NOW

  • ⚠️ Winter is coming: Dhanbad temperatures drop to 5°C. Children sleep in makeshift shacks without blankets or warm clothes
  • ⚠️ Food crisis deepening: Coal prices have dropped; families are earning even less
  • ⚠️ School expansion urgent: Sahadeva Foundation has land but needs funds to build a larger facility for 200 more children
  • ⚠️ Health emergency: Monsoon contaminated water sources; children falling sick daily

Delay means more children will slip through the cracks—permanently.

Real Stories: Hope Against All Odds

Anjali's Transformation: “Two years ago, 10-year-old Anjali was carrying coal bags with her mother. Today, she's the top student in her class at Sahadeva Foundation's learning center. She dreams of becoming a teacher—to help children just like her.”

Ravi's Recovery: “Ravi came to us severely malnourished, unable to walk properly. After 6 months of nutritious meals and care, he's now energetic, healthy, and learning to read. His mother cries with gratitude every time she sees him smile.”

A Mother's Plea: “My daughter coughs blood at night because of coal dust. I want her to study, but we have no food. Sahadeva Foundation gave us hope. Now she eats two meals daily and goes to their school. For the first time, I believe she might have a different life.” — Sunita Devi, coal picker
